Pathogenesis of the Strongylosis Syndrome in Ruminants
A Review of Mechanisms of Tissue Damage, Metabolic Disturbances, and Immune Response
Abstract: Strongylosis syndrome represents a clinical-pathological heterogeneity of high economic significance in ruminants, primarily resulting from mixed infections with nematodes of the family Trichostrongylidae. The core pathogenesis of the disease relies on the proliferation of undifferentiated epithelial cells in the abomasal pyloric glands, replacing secretory cells. This substitution leads to hypochlorhydria and an elevated abomasal pH. These changes result in impaired protein digestion, increased vascular permeability, and the leakage of plasma proteins into the gut lumen. Metabolic consequences include nutrient malabsorption, hypoproteinemia, edema, and anemia.
