درس چهارم

فعل Exchange به معنی "تبدیل کردن" یا "معاوضه کردن" است.

اشتباه رایج این است که بگوییم: "He exchanged his collection for some foreign stamps by..." (یعنی با حرف اضافه by).

اما درست آن این است: "He exchanged his collection of matchboxes for some foreign stamps."

فعل Fail به معنی "رد شدن" یا "شکست خوردن".

نگویید: "Steven failed from maths last year."

درست آن: "Steven failed in maths last year."

کلمه Full به معنی "پر".

اشتباه نکنید و نگویید: "The jar was full with oil." یا "full from oil."

درست آن: "The jar was full of oil."

عبارت Get rid به معنی "خلاص شدن".

نگویید: "I'll be glad to get rid from him."

درست آن: "I'll be glad to get rid of him."

کلمه Glad به معنی "خوشحال".

اشتباه رایج: "Francis was glad from receiving your letter."

درست آن: "Francis was glad about receiving your letter."

کلمه Good به معنی "خوب".

نگویید: "My sister's good in maths."

درست آن: "My sister's good at maths."

فعل Guard به معنی "محافظت کردن".

نگویید: "You must guard from bad habits."

درست آن: "You must guard against bad habits."

ما در برابر چیزی Guard against می‌کنیم.

کلمه Guilty به معنی "مجرم" یا "گناهکار".

اشتباه رایج: "He was found guilty for murder."

درست آن: "He was found guilty of murder."

پس همیشه Guilty of.

کلمه Independent به معنی "مستقل".

نگویید: "Clare's independent from her parents."

درست آن: "Clare's independent of her parents."

ما از کسی Independent of هستیم.

نکته جالب: متضاد این کلمه، یعنی Dependent (وابسته)، با On می‌آید. مثلاً: "A child is dependent on its parents."
